The Viking Trail
A glacier-carved, land-locked fjord with 600 m cliffs and waterfalls that turn to mist.
Western Brook Pond is a freshwater fjord inside Gros Morne National Park, carved by glaciers and cut off from the sea when the land rebounded after the last ice age. Sheer rock walls rise about 650 m, and streams cascade down as waterfalls that often dissipate into mist before reaching the water. The pond is reached by a flat 3 km walk from the Viking Trail (route 430) through bog and tuckamore; boat tours operate on the pond in season.
How to get there
Park at the Western Brook Pond trailhead on Route 430; the flat 3 km walk through bog and tuckamore meets the boat tour at the pond — book the boat ahead in July and August.
