Trinity Loop
trinity · The Bonavista Peninsula
Abandoned railway loop + dead amusement park near Trinity — kids remember the rides, explorers go for the ruin.
The Trinity Train Loop (Goose Cove, near Trinity) is a 1911 Reid Newfoundland / J.P. Powell grade loop around Loop Pond (~2 km, ~10 m drop) so narrow-gauge trains could reach Trinity without an impossible hill. Only loop of its kind in North America (BC cousins are inside mountains). Bonavista branch closed 1984; Clayton Cook saved it from scrap. Heritage structure 1988. Francis Kelly ran an amusement park on it until 2004 (train ride, bumper boats, mini-golf, Ferris wheel). Vacant since; Ferris wheel down; Hurricane Igor 2010. Crown RFP 2024 tourism redevelopment ($55k, derelict). Adventure visit — not a working park. Safety: ruins, bats, don't treat it as a playground.
The story they tell
Urban-explorer blogs sell it as a haunted amusement graveyard. Locals remember the park. The engineering story is the real gem.
How to get there
Goose Cove, beside Trinity: the 1911 rail loop wraps Loop Pond about 2 km around — a ruin walk on the old amusement-park grade, no ticket, no hours.
Mind yourself
Abandoned and unmaintained since the park closed: rusted rides, open water and broken ground. Walk the grade only, keep off the derelict equipment, and leave nothing but footprints.
