The Rooms is Newfoundland and Labrador's premier cultural institution, located on a prominent hillside site in St. John's overlooking the harbour. Opened in 2005, the building houses the Provincial Museum, the Provincial Art Gallery, and the Provincial Archives under one striking modernist roof. The building's dramatic architecture was inspired by the traditional 'rooms' of Newfoundland outport fisheries — the waterside wooden sheds and stages where fish were processed and stored — scaled up and expressed in contemporary materials. The design by architect Fowler Bauld & Mitchell gives the building an angular, layered silhouette that is visible from much of the city and has become part of St. John's skyline. The Provincial Museum collection spans Newfoundland's natural history, Indigenous cultures, European exploration and settlement, the fishery, Confederation with Canada in 1949, and contemporary provincial life. The archive holds an extraordinary collection of documents, photographs, and records relating to Newfoundland's history. The Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of works by Newfoundland and Labrador artists as well as broader Canadian and international collections. The Rooms hosts major travelling exhibitions, educational programs, and community events. It functions as the cultural memory of the province and is the institution tasked with preserving and interpreting Newfoundland and Labrador's identity. Admission to The Rooms includes all three institutions and the building itself is worth visiting for the architecture and harbour views alone.
