Signal Hill is a National Historic Site of Canada overlooking the entrance to St. John's harbour and is arguably the most historically significant landmark in Newfoundland. The hill — a dramatic rocky promontory rising to 168 metres above sea level — has served as a strategic military lookout and signalling station for centuries, alerting the city to approaching ships by hoisting signal flags identifying arriving vessels. The site was of intense military importance during the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, and both World Wars, with a complex of earthworks, gun batteries, and fortifications constructed across successive conflicts. The most famous event in Signal Hill's history occurred on December 12, 1901, when Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless telegraph signal at the site. Standing at the top of Signal Hill in a temporary wireless station, Marconi detected three dots — the Morse code letter 'S' — transmitted from Poldhu, Cornwall, England, over 3,400 kilometres away. This demonstration that radio waves could follow the curvature of the earth transformed global communications. The Signal Hill National Historic Site includes interpretive exhibits about the hill's military and communications history, and in summer the Newfoundland Regiment performs the Signal Hill Tattoo, a military historical pageant. The walking trails on Signal Hill — including the North Head Trail along the cliff tops — offer some of the most spectacular ocean and harbour views in Atlantic Canada.
