Why the rum is called Screech
Screech got its name when an American serviceman downed a shot and let out a howl.
The rum Newfoundlanders call Screech is a dark rum long tied to the salt-cod trade with the Caribbean, shipped from Jamaica in return for dried fish. The Newfoundland Liquor Corporation (earlier Commission) began marketing it under the Screech label in the 1940s; today it is a blend of imported Jamaican rum bottled at 40 percent. The Canadian Encyclopedia records the naming story but explicitly frames it as local legend rather than documented fact.
The story they tell
The legend, happily retold by the brand itself: a Second World War American serviceman in a St. John's bar downed a shot of the potent dark rum and screeched, giving the drink its name. An older variant swaps in an unsuspecting sailor and rum of very dubious quality. Good story; the paper trail stops at the trademark.
How to get there
Taste Screech at any NL Liquor store or George Street pub; the label story is on the bottle.
