Mistaken Point UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Irish Loop
The oldest large, complex life-forms found anywhere on Earth, fossilized on a Newfoundland headland.
Mistaken Point on the southern Avalon preserves Ediacaran fossils between 580 and 541 million years old - the oldest large, complex life-forms found anywhere on Earth - across more than 100 fossil-bearing bedding planes, including a 565-million-year-old seafloor surface. The fossils were discovered in 1967 by Shiva Balak Misra with Paul Thompson, the first such finds in the Western Hemisphere. The site was inscribed by UNESCO on 17 July 2016. The point took its name from ships mistaking it for Cape Race in fog. It sits at Portugal Cove South, about two hours south of St. John's on Highway 10, and is accessible by guided tour only (mistakenpoint.ca, 709-438-1011), mid-May to mid-October, one tour daily at 12:30, lasting 3.5-4 hours over a 6 km moderate trail, limited to 12 people, $23 for adults with children 12 and under free.
