L'Anse aux Meadows
lanse-aux-meadows · The Viking Trail
The only confirmed Norse site in North America - Vikings were here 1,000 years ago.
L'Anse aux Meadows at the tip of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula is the first known evidence of European presence in the Americas. Norse settlers from Greenland established a small encampment of timber-and-sod buildings here over 1,000 years ago (ca. AD 1000); the archaeological remains of eight buildings and artifacts of iron working were excavated from the 1960s onward. The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and is managed by Parks Canada, with reconstructed sod buildings and costumed interpretation.
The story they tell
Some sagas place a place called Vinland here, with grapes and wild grain; the meadows at L'Anse aux Meadows grow no grapes, and the name's true referent remains debated.
How to get there
At the tip of the Northern Peninsula, about 2.5 hours north of Gros Morne via the Viking Trail (Route 430); the Parks Canada site and reconstructed sod camp sit at the end of the road past St. Anthony's turn.
