Heart's Content Cable Station
hearts-content · The Baccalieu Trail
The Victorian cable station where the first successful permanent transatlantic telegraph line came ashore in 1866 — 'weeks to minutes'.
Heart's Content on Trinity Bay is where the first successful permanent transatlantic telegraph cable was landed in 1866, cutting cross-Atlantic message times from weeks to minutes; the town stayed a global communications hub for more than a century. The station — an 1875 office building with a 1918 extension — offers interpreter-led or self-guided tours, Morse-code sending, a Discovery Room, a 1960s communications room and a film about laying the cable, while Cable Park across the road shows the remnants of the cable itself (See the Sites / provincial historic sites). The 2026 season runs May 16 to October 9, seven days a week.
