Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Gordon Pinsent (1930-2023)

Grand Falls' own - the actor Newfoundland claims as its greatest, from The Rowdyman to an award-winning turn at 77.

Gordon Edward Pinsent was born 12 July 1930 in Grand Falls (now Grand Falls-Windsor) and died 25 February 2023 after a 60-year screen career of more than 150 credits. He wrote and starred in The Rowdyman (1972) and wrote, directed and starred in John and the Missus (1986), winning the Genie Award for best actor; his performance in Sarah Polley's Away From Her (2007) brought him a second Genie and international acclaim late in life. Television audiences knew him from Due South and The Red Green Show, and he took a 2013 Canadian Screen Award for a guest role in Republic of Doyle. An Officer (1979) then Companion (1998) of the Order of Canada, he received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award in 2004, and Grand Falls-Windsor's arts centre was renamed the Gordon Pinsent Centre for the Arts in 2005.

Fact

Where that comes from

On the go

Them days the garden party was the whole summer. Here's what's on the go now, and when.

The kitchen

Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.

The hall

Them days the hall had a dance Saturday and the kitchen had music the rest of the week. It's still playing. Come in and listen.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
