Gazeebow Unit
Three fifteen-year-olds from Airport Heights who made St. John's hip-hop history in 2005 rapping about trikes, bikes and the gazebo.
Gazeebow Unit is a rap group formed in the summer of 2005 by three 15-year-olds from Airport Heights in east-end St. John's - Mike $hanx, Alpabit and M to the C - named for the neighbourhood gazebo near Philly's Convenience. Their low-budget videos went viral in 2005, before YouTube was big, while the members were still in Grade 9, and the attention reached folklore scholars: Memorial University's Philip Hiscock and linguist Sandra Clarke studied the group, publishing in the Journal of English Linguistics (2009) on how their local language styled young working-class 'skeet' identity. CBC even used their music in 2006 to promote the NL comedy series Hatching, Matching and Dispatching. In December 2011 they were pulled 'out of the gazebo' for a special guest appearance at Donnie Dumphy's Christmas show at Club One in St. John's.
The story they tell
In the yarn version they are skeets immortalized by accident; the MUN folklorists say they were parodists the whole time - 'strategic inauthenticity' with a beat.
