Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Donnie Dumphy

St. John's favourite fictional skeet - dirt bike, nachos and all - created in 2008 and riding from YouTube to a 2014 feature film.

Donnie Dumphy is a fictional St. John's everyman, a 'skeet' persona created in 2008 and played by actor Leon Parsons, with videos produced by his longtime friend Nik Sexton; the two started out shooting skateboard videos for fun. Web shorts such as 'Havin' a Time' drew well over a million views and carried the character to a 15-minute short, How to Be Deadly, screened at Cannes and TIFF in 2012, and a 2014 feature film of the same name directed by Sexton, co-written with Ed Riche and shot in St. John's on a budget of about $1.2 million. Sexton plays Dumphy's pal Ronnie Driscoll, and Gina Squires plays Brenda on screen. Academics Sandra Clarke and Philip Hiscock cite Dumphy alongside Gazeebow Unit as key examples of performed 'skeet' identity.

The story they tell

To be clear for visitors: Donnie Dumphy is a character. Real St. John's people do not all ride dirt bikes through the kitchen - but they will quote him at you.

Fact

Where that comes from

On the go

Them days the garden party was the whole summer. Here's what's on the go now, and when.

The kitchen

Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.

The hall

Them days the hall had a dance Saturday and the kitchen had music the rest of the week. It's still playing. Come in and listen.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
