Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Cupids (Cuper's Cove), 1610

cupids · The Baccalieu Trail

Canada's oldest English colony - and the birth of English family life in North America.

Cuper's Cove (modern Cupids) was established in 1610 by the Newfoundland Company under John Guy - the second English colony in North America after Jamestown. In 1612, 16 women arrived to join the settlement, and on 17 March 1613 the first English child was born there, the son of Nicholas Guy. The colony was harassed by the pirate Peter Easton, with protection paid in livestock. Guy left in 1615, and the settlement had dispersed by about 1624 - but its successors seeded later colonies at Renews (Vaughan), Ferryland (Calvert), and St. John's (Payne).

How to get there

Cupids (the old Cuper's Cove) on Conception Bay, reached off Route 70/75 on the Baccalieu side; the dig site and legacy exhibits are signposted in the community.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
