Colony of Avalon, Ferryland
ferryland · The Irish Loop
A 1621 English colony being dug out of the ground in front of you - one of the best-preserved early sites in North America.
The Colony of Avalon at Ferryland was founded in 1621 under George Calvert. It is billed as one of the best-preserved early English colonial sites in North America, with over two million artifacts recovered. Visitors can see the excavated 'prettie cobblestone street', a 17th-century kitchen, and heritage gardens, and join programs such as Archaeologist For A Day. The site notes that Protestants and Catholics 'worshipped in peace' here, and that in the later Kirke era a woman held most of the power. A Beothuk presence at Ferryland is also noted by the site. Open June to October, about an hour from St. John's on the Irish Loop.
