Bay Roberts is a town of approximately 10,000 people on Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, making it one of the larger communities in the region outside of St. John's. The town has deep roots in the historic cod fishery and was once a significant centre for fish processing and the seal hunt. Bay Roberts developed as a mercantile community and was home to a number of prominent merchant families who traded in salt fish. The town has a strong connection to Newfoundland's entrepreneurial history — it was home to early retail businesses and is sometimes cited in local history as an example of how Conception Bay communities developed commercial independence from the St. John's merchant elite. Today Bay Roberts is largely a bedroom community for workers commuting to St. John's and other Avalon Peninsula employers, particularly in the offshore oil industry. The community has experienced growth related to oil-sector employment. Bay Roberts is known locally for its Annual Craft Faire and community events, and the surrounding area includes pleasant coastal scenery typical of the Conception Bay shore. The town amalgamated several surrounding communities including Coley's Point, Clarke's Beach area, and Shearstown. It lies on the Trans-Canada Highway corridor and is easily accessible from St. John's, approximately one hour's drive to the east.
