Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

On the go

Them days the garden party was the whole summer. Here's what's on the go now, and when.

The kitchen

Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.

Snowballs

No-bake cocoa and oat balls rolled in coconut, kept in the fridge.

Makes about four dozen · Twenty minutes, then chilling

What you need

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 3 cups large rolled oats
  • 1 cup fine unsweetened coconut
  • 12 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups extra coconut for rolling

How it's done

  1. 1. Combine the sugar, butter and milk in a large saucepan — it foams up, so use a big one.
  2. 2. Boil gently over medium heat five or six minutes, to about 225°F.
  3. 3. Mix the oats, one cup of coconut and the cocoa together.
  4. 4. Stir the boiled mixture into the dry until well combined, then chill it.
  5. 5. Roll it into balls, then roll the balls in more coconut.
  6. 6. Keep them in the fridge so they stay soft. They freeze well.

Where to get a feed

Christmas baking season, from late November. Sold by the dozen at church craft fairs.

Where that comes from

The hall

Them days the hall had a dance Saturday and the kitchen had music the rest of the week. It's still playing. Come in and listen.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
