Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

On the go

Them days the garden party was the whole summer. Here's what's on the go now, and when.

The kitchen

Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.

Date squares

A cooked date filling between two layers of oat and coconut crumble.

One pan · Twenty to thirty minutes in the oven

What you need

  • chopped dates
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • vanilla
  • water
  • rolled oats
  • flour
  • unsweetened coconut
  • baking powder

How it's done

  1. 1. Heat the oven to 350°F and grease or line your pan.
  2. 2. For the filling, boil the chopped dates with butter, brown sugar, vanilla and water on a medium heat about fifteen minutes, stirring, until it is thick.
  3. 3. For the crumble, mix rolled oats, flour, coconut, brown sugar, baking powder and butter until it is crumbly.
  4. 4. Press half the crumble into the pan.
  5. 5. Spread the date filling over it.
  6. 6. Scatter the rest of the crumble on top.
  7. 7. Bake twenty to thirty minutes until golden. Do not overbake. Cool, then cut in two-inch squares.

Where to get a feed

On the square plate at a time, a funeral lunch or a card game in the hall.

Where that comes from

The hall

Them days the hall had a dance Saturday and the kitchen had music the rest of the week. It's still playing. Come in and listen.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
