Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.
Boiled dinner
Salt beef and vegetables cooked slowly in one pot, without the pudding bags.

What you need
- salted beef or salt pork ribs
- potatoes
- cabbage
- turnip
- carrots
- parsnip
- onion
How it's done
- 1. Peel the vegetables and hold them in cold water.
- 2. Put the raw or part-cooked salt beef in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- 3. Layer the vegetables over it: cabbage, turnip, carrot, potato, and parsnip last if you are using it.
- 4. Boil the kettle and fill the cooker about three-quarters, leaving room at the top.
- 5. Put the lid on, set it on the counter clear of anything, and leave it six to eight hours.
- 6. Use vegetable broth instead of the salt meat if you would rather, with a teaspoon of salt.
- 7. Make a quick gravy from the pot liquor to serve with it.
Where to get a feed
A plain one-pot dinner. If you are handed a plate in a house on a Sunday, this is often what it is.
